"Happy Birthday" is a song traditionally sung to celebrate the anniversary of a person's birthday, and is attributed as being created by Patty and Mildred J. Hill in 1893. It was first copyrighted in 1935 by the Summy Company, which was bought by Warner/Chappell Music in 1988. Based on the original copyright registration, Warner/Chappell claimed the UNited States copyright of the song would not expire until 2030 and regularly sought out royalties for unauthorized public performances of the song, which in February 2010 amounted to $700 USD. In September 2016, a federal judge in Los Angeles declared that Warner/Chappell's copyright claim was invalid and only applied to a specific piano arrangement of the song, not it's lyrics or melody. The company settled in February 2016, and on June 28, 2016 the court declared the song was in the public domain.
Due to these copyright restrictions, Michael Aranda would regularly start singing the "Happy Birthday" song, only to edit a cut in the middle of the first line of the song.
