Transcript[edit | edit source]

Newburyport, Massachusetts

Claire Hopkins: This is Claire, and I’m at Maudslay State Park in Newburyport, Massachusetts filming a video for my channel, Brilliant Botany, but this is what Michael is doing right now.

("Intro" plays over the opening title screen.)

Michael Aranda's Apartment Complex – 6:55 AM MDT

(Michael Aranda walks down the stairs outside his apartment to his car.)

Michael Aranda: 6:55 in the morning. Perfect time to go to the gym. But probably an even better time to go back to sleep.

Michael Aranda's Ford Mustang

(A deep percussive beat plays over a timelapse out the front windshield of Michael driving to Monkey Bar Gymnasium. The timelapse continues as Michael goes into the gym and gets ready to work out. The shot fades to white and becomes the gray clouds in the sky.)

Michael Aranda's Apartment

(The camera looks up at the gray clouds from Michael's balcony. As it pans down, snow flakes floating in the wind can be seen.)

Michael: I guess we’re not totally done with the snow this year. I don't think this is going to stick, but... it is snowing right now.

(Index cautiously creeps toward the balcony railing.)

Right cat? Right.

Synema Studios Office

(Todd Williams stands partially in shadow in the hallway in the back of the office.)

Michael: Good morning, Toddly.

Todd: Good morning! Welcome to your first day!

(Todd holds up his right hand, walks down the hall to Michael, and gives him a high-five.)

Michael: Today is my first full day working here.

Todd: Boom!

Michael: So, uh... let’s get to work, I guess.

(The camera shows Michel's laptop open to a long article.)

I was just doing some reading about the legality of using Lego bricks in videos.

Todd: I... think we should do it.

Michael: You know what I’ve learned?

Todd: What?

Michael: Nothing. I can’t tell if we’re allowed to do that or not.

(Katelyn laughs.)

Todd: S-send that to me, and I’ll read it.

Michael: (Unsure) Okay.

Todd: I pro—

Michael: I did just read the whole thing, though.

Todd: Oh... I-I just—

Michael: It’s ambiguous.

Todd: I guess I just called you stupid.

(Michael unzips his jacket slightly to show the Blonde-Stripe Queen Shirt he's wearing.)

Michael: So the most recent blonde stripe design that we’ve done is the Queen,

(The camera shows the Blonde-Stripe Lincoln banner hanging in the hallway.)

and before we did that one, we had... uh, Abraham Lincoln.

(The camera shows the Blonde-Stripe Einstein banner hanging in the hallway.)

And the original one... was Einstein. And we’ve heard from a lot of people that they...

(Todd holds a Blonde-Stripe Einstein Shirt up to his torso.)

wish that they could get a shirt with the Einstein design on it, so we’re thinking maybe we’ll do another run of the Einstein shirt. The problem is... we need to make sure we can move enough of them to make it worth the cost of printing. So the magic number is about 50. If you are interested in getting an Einstein shirt, please let us know in the comments. We’re gonna use it sort of as an informal survey to gauge whether or not we have enough interest to go through with ordering another round of these shirts.

Todd: I mean just look how great it looks on me. I mean, don’t you want to look this fantastic?

(Todd does a large, fake smile at the camera. Michael and Katelyn laugh.)

(The camera shows Michael's laptop, which is open to a list of WhatImDoingRightNow videos and their number of views.)

Michael: Okay, let’s just—let’s just look at some view counts on—on these videos that we’ve uploaded recently. Uh... you know, 2,700... eh. 3,200, 3,000, 4200—it’s probably because that one had Charlie in it. 3800—it’s 'cause that one had Abi in it. Uh, but you know... it’s, like, high two’s, low three’s consistently. Um, so what happens when you upload a video that has the word “boob” in the title?

Todd: I watch it 6000 times.

(Katelyn laughs.)

Michael: 7200 views, Todd

Todd: I’m just refreshing. Does that count if you refresh it?

Michael: I don’t know.

Todd: Huh.

Katelyn Salem: 'Cause some people could just have bots that—

Todd: Yeah I guess so.

Katelyn: —boost up their—

Todd: And I guess, uh... IP addresses would be a thing to keep track of. So that was a lie. Wasn’t me, then!

Michael: YouTube also thinks that that video only has two comments on it—

Katelyn: Yeah.

Michael: —but if you click on it,

Todd: There has, at least maybe 14.

Michael: there are many more than two.

(The camera shows Katelyn's computer screen, which has After Effects open a with a red screen that reads "Invalid achievement text. Please enter numbers".)

Okay, I just finished adding this very special feature to the After Effects file that we use in the vlogs. Uh... So when the achievements pop up at the bottom of the screen, we’ve had a few instances where data was entered incorrectly in there and it was still, like, an "X", which is the default placeholder or something. So now there’s an error message that pops up until, uh... Katelyn goes in there and plugs in some real numbers.

Katelyn: Mmm!

Michael: Until Katelyn goes in there—

Katelyn: Like, like...

Michael: —and plugs in some real numbers.

Katelyn: Like this...

(Katelyn enters a number and the screen changes to a black screen with a +1 Todd-fives! pop up on the bottom.)

Michael: Oh, bam.

(The pop up spins to show a season total of two Todd-fives.)

Katelyn: Todd fives, two.

Michael: Yup. So now if there is something that isn’t a number typed into those fields, it’ll bring up that red screen again. Hopefully, that’ll cut down on the number of times that, uh... we accidentally upload something wrong.

(Todd has his arm stretched out toward Michael. Michael walks over and receives a high-five from him.)

Todd: Like that.

Michael: Yeah.

Todd: Hopefully, that's—

Michael: Yeah.

Todd: that’s a—that’s a number.

5:32 PM MDT

(Michael is walking out to the parking lot.)

Michael: Alrighty. It is five-thirty o’clock. Does the "o" in o’clock—it’s a shorted version of "of”, right? It’s five of clock?

Katelyn: I don’t know...

Michael: That sounds dumb.

Katelyn Salem's Jeep

Michael: (Phlegmy) Hen-yway, today was productive. Finished sound on an episode of Crash Course Sociology, created that error message for the WhatImDoingRightNow After Effects file, emailed Joshua Voiles to... try to set up a Skype call with him, got a vlog uploaded. We got a hard drive of footage off to... uh, a client in Salt Lake City who wanted footage of a woodcut being made that they had Claire Emery do. So we filmed that for them and then sent that off today. We sent off three shirt orders today.

Katelyn: And some Patreon perks.

Michael: And some Patreon perks. And then, uh... we got Todd a debit card from the bank

(Katelyn laughs.)

so that he can give money to the post office when he ships things. And I—I went to the gym this morning.

Katelyn: You were so productive today!

Michael: I still... would like to go for a jog.

Katelyn: Outside?

(Michael looks around out the car windows.)

Michael: Uh, maybe... It’s seems okay for jogging.

Katelyn: Yeah, seems okay.

Michael: If I could fit some video games in tonight, that would be good. One thing I would like to do now that I’m working in the Synema office instead of the Complexly office, uh... is set up a portion of my workday that is actually dedicated to Twitch streaming. And I’d like that time to differ depending on the day of the week. So like, some days maybe Twitch will be the first thing that I do in the office for an hour or two; that would be, like, 8 AM pacific time. Other days it might be, like, the last part of the day, so that depending on where people are in the world, they can tune into the Twitch streams that work best for them.

(Katelyn yawns.)

Michael: Huh?

Katelyn: Wha?

Michael: People in the comments say that you yawn a lot.

Katelyn: I know. Maybe it’s just whenever you pull your phone out, it’s when I yawn.

Michael: My phone is just so sleepy.

Michael Aranda's Apartment – 9:17 PM MDT

Michael: Today my evening—this evening has been graced by a wonderful presence!

(Marcus Schlueter stands in the living room in front of the TV. Zelda: Breath of the Wild is playing on it.)

Marcus. You’ve come over to play Zelda on my television.

Marcus: Yeah! Otherwise, I woulda just been playing Zelda on my television. Or anywhere, because the Switch!

(Marcus holds up the JoyCons he's holding. Michael and Kelsey chuckle.)

Buy one today! But you can’t because nowhere has them in still. Now I look like a jerk in front of the whole internet. I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to, like, tempt you with my—

(Marcus sighs.)

Look internet, if you want to come over and play Zelda, I feel really bad.

(Michael chuckles.)

Oh wait! But they’re gonna see—

(Marcus covers up the TV.)

I got like armor and weapons and stuff that people don’t want to know about. You should—gotta put, like, a warning on this.

Michael: Spoilers?

Marcus: Yeah! Like just pixel my gear!

Michael: I can pixelate anything you want.

Marcus: 'Kay... It’s not—Well, I don’t want to make more work for you, of course, but—It’s not exactly late game gear, but I want to be delicate with this.

(The camera dolly zooms on Index, who is laying on top of the back of the living room chair.)

Or you know, like, the number of hearts that I have considering it’s not the traditional Zelda number to max out at.

(A synth drones over the Tuesday April 4, 2017 screen.)

Kelsey Cote's Car – 6:51 AM MDT

Michael: 6:51 in the morning. It’s below freezing again.

(Kelsey has her hood up and is scrunched up over the steering wheel to conserve warmth.)

Kelsey Cote: Nooo, it’s not fun.

Michael: (Yawning) Going to the gym is fun, though. Let’s get pumped up! (Groaning in pain) Oh, I need my seatbelt, but I can’t reach it because my arms are sore.

Monkey Bar Gymnasium

(The camera shows the sign over the door, and then some geese flying overhead.)

Michael: Monkey Bar. Geese.

(Michael points to the back of Kelsey's shirt.)

Michael: Kelsey, your shirt says “Paddle Me.”

Kelsey Cote's Car

Michael: Kelsey.

Kelsey: How many did you get to?

Michael: I finished the set of 8s all the way through. So that... is, like, 90 total reps.

Kelsey: I... finished it all. But I did skip one set of lunges.

Michael: Mmm.

Kelsey: But I did the entire thing!

Michael: So that’s 122 reps of each exercise.

Kelsey: Uh huh.

Michael: But, I do weigh 90 lbs more than you do.

Kelsey: Your, uh... lunges go faster than mine do.

Michael: But each lunge requires me to lift 90 more pounds.

Kelsey: But that also means you have the muscle structure to lift 90 more lbs, whereas I don’t.

Michael: I don’t think that

(Kelsey laughs.)

my muscles are as adept at lifting my weight as your's are at lifting your weight.

Kelsey: Uh... I don’t know...

Michael: The last time I was regularly going to Monkey Bar, I weighed about 25 lbs less than I do. I feel the difference. Lunges didn’t used to be this hard. Burpees didn’t used to be this hard.

Kelsey: I started off doing the hardest level of everything—

Michael: Oh, I saw and I was like, “That’s not gonna last.”

(Kelsey laughs heartily.)

Kelsey: It didn’t!

Michael: Now it’s time to start the day...

Synema Studios Office – 11:16 AM MDT

(Michael and Todd walk through another part of the building their office is in.)

Michael: So, for Kate Tectonics, we shot some of an episode on this VHS tape right here that Todd has.

Todd: Mhm.

Michael: And we’re currently trying to figure out how to get the video off of this, onto this.

(Michael tapes at an external hard drive.)

And it’s complicated!

(Todd laughs.)

(Michael points at a rack of different video production equipment.)

Michael: You gotta, like, play it on this, onto a different thing, and then from there onto—

(Joel Baird holds into frame a small machine.)

Joel: DVCam, the format of the aughts.

Michael: Oh my...

Joel: Mhm.

Michael: So we’re transferring it from VHS to DVCam, and then from DVCam to...

Joel: Uh...

Michael: Hard drive?

Joel: To hard drive.

Todd: So, I mean, it would definitely (laughing) lose the quality, which is kinda what we’re going for, I guess, right?

Michael: Yeah, yeah.

(The camera shows Michael's laptop screen, which has Dropbox open in a browser window.)

Michael: I logged in to Dropbox and it popped up this thing that said, “Dropbox has a fresh look! New design makes it easier to find, organize, and share stuff.” And then it invites me to start the tour.

(Michael incessantly clicks his mouse.)

But if I don’t want to take the tour, I can’t not take the tour. I have to take the tour, Todd.

(Todd loudly bites into an apple while staring into the camera. Michael laughs.)

I guess I’ll take the tour...

(Dropbox highlights two scroll arrows on the left side of the screen by placing a blue circle around them.)

Here’s a thing that makes things go up and down.

(A blue dot appears next to the first folder in Michael's Dropbox.)

Here’s a thing that shows you, um... a thing. Oh, I actually have to click it for it to go.

(Michael clicks "Okay" several times on a pop up on the bottom of the screen.)

Yeah, whatever. Okay, I’m done. Thank you for forcing me to do that.

Todd: Time well spent.

Michael: Wasting my time, Todd!

Todd: Mmm!

5:53 PM MDT

(Katelyn is dressed in a denim jacket, apron, and chef's hat sitting at the Kate Tectonics desk. Half of a frosting Earth sits on the desk in front of her on a serving plate.)

Michael: Are you ready, Katelyn?

Katelyn: (In a low voice) Ready as I’ll ever be.

(Sarah Meismer is standing behind a camera prepared to film.)

Michael: Are you ready, Sarah?

Sarah Meismer: Mhm.

(The camera pans down to Sarah's foot tapping. Sarah and Michael laugh.)

(Dance music plays over a One Kate Tectonics Later screen.)

Michael: Okay, we just finished filming! We got all of the indoor stuff of Kate Tectonics Episode 4 done.

(Sarah turns the lock on the front door of the Synema Studios office.)

Thank you, Sarah Meismer. You just locked yourself in.

Sarah: (Sadly but also laughing) Oooh ho ho.

Michael: That—yeah, there. That’s how you get out. Okay, bye!

Sarah: Alright, bye.

Katelyn Salem's Jeep

Michael: So the work out that I had to do at Monkey Bar Gym today was 15 kettlebell throws, I think they’re called. You sort of squat down with a kettlebell between your legs and then thrust forward to bring the kettlebell up to eye level and then back down. So 15 of those, 15 burpees—if you don’t know what those are, you can google it.

(Katelyn laughs.)

And then 15 deck squats, which are: you’re standing up and then you sort of sit down and then roll onto your back and then roll forward and stand up again. So 15 of each of those followed by 30 yards of walking lunges. 15 of which are done forward, and 15 of which are done backward. And after you do that, you go back to the kettlebells again and do 14 of those, 14 burpees, 14 deck squats, 30 yds of walking lunges. And then 13, 30 yds. 12, 30 yds. And what destroyed me today was the backwards lunges. Those just tore up my quads so that now they feel like hamburger meat.

Katelyn: Mmm!

Michael: And I can’t stand up!

Katelyn: Mmm!

Michael: I can stand up, it just—it’s hard to stand up. But, I guess that I’m glad that I went because this is the first day that I can remember in a long time that I’ve gone to a gym two days in a row. This is not including going to the fitness center to use the treadmill. This is first time in—in a while that I’ve gone two days in a row to do resistance type workout stuff.

(Katelyn yawns.)

Katelyn: Like gym gym?

Michael: Gym gym.

Katelyn: You could go tomorrow! And that would make it 3!

Michael: It would make it 3. But I can’t go 4 days because on Thursday morning at 6 am I’m flying to (in a deep, gravely voice) Amsterdam!

Katelyn: That’s a—that’s a really early flight.

Michael: It is a very early flight, but! Stefan is on my flight.

Katelyn: Oooo!

Michael: I don’t think we’re sitting together.

Katelyn: Are you gonna sit together? (Disappointedly) Oh...

Michael: I don’t think we’re sitting together.

Katelyn: Oh. I think we all need more Stefan in our lives.

Michael: We do need more Stefan in our lives. (Mockingly) But he had to, like, fall in love and go live with her.

Katelyn: Yeah... with that—

Michael: And stuff...

Katelyn: With that girl...

Michael: It’s her birthday today, by the way.

Katelyn: (Laughing) It is. Happy birthday, Nicole!

Michael: Happy birthday, Nicole! ♪ Happy Birthday ♪

Todd Williams' RV – 10:22 PM MDT

(Michael and Kelsey walk through a parking lot towards Todd's RV.)

Michael: Not that you can see this very well right now, but I’m holding a little space heater that Todd let me borrow for my basement cave at Complexly. Tomorrow morning, Todd is leaving on a little vacation. He’s taking his RV down into Idaho, and then over into Oregon, and, I think, back up into Washington, and then back over here to Montana. But, since I don’t need this thing in the Complexly cave anymore, delivering it back to Todd in his RV.

Hi Kelsey.

Kelsey: Hi.

Michael: How are you?

Kelsey: Cold.

(Todd's RV is parked in the parking lot. The first two letters of the Tioga label near the back are gone.)

Michael: Look at this Todd-mobile right here.

Kelsey: It is no longer the Tioga, it’s just (dramatically) Oga.

Michael: (Dramatically) Oga.

(Michael walks up to the open door of the RV. Todd walks past and sees them.)

Hello?!

Todd: Hello! Come on in!

Michael: Here’s a heater for yah.

Todd: Thanks, bud!

Michael: Mhm.

Todd: It’s gonna keep me warm at night.

Michael: I remember this RV!

Todd: Yeah! It’s, uh, going on a voyage. Tomorrow morning, early.

Kelsey: Here, (laughing) would you like one of these?

(Kelsey hands Michael a Diet Dr. Pepper that has a bulge at the top of the can.)

Michael: Oh, thanks. What happened to this?

Todd: Well, it fell out of a cupboard and—and did that.

Todd: But it’s safe to drink, you’re fine.

Michael: What I’m curious about is, when you have this whole thing to yourself, do you still sleep up there?

(Todd points at the table, which folds down into a bed.)

Todd: No. This is by far the—the most comfortable.
