The Nintendo Switch Pro Controller: It claims to “Take your game sessions up a notch with... motion controls, HD rumble, built-in amiibo functionality, and more.”

The Nintendo Switch Pro controller charges over USB-C with a battery lasting up to 40 hours. It’s around 14 ounces making it lighter than an Xbox One controller and heavier than a PS4 controller.

While the layout of the controller is similar to what you see on other modern consoles, the transparent plastic on the front and curved design falls in line with controllers we’ve seen from Nintendo in the past.

Joy-Cons, the controllers that come with the Switch, offer a lot of unique functionality like being able to attach the controllers to the console or using each Joy-Con separately. This design means that the Joy-Cons are small and the cost of their versatility is that the button layout can be strange for people used to more typical gaming controllers. Some third party accessory makers have tried to remedy this by making holders for the Joy-Cons, but if you are planning to play the Switch for a long period of time, it quickly becomes obvious that the Joy-Cons aren’t always ideal.

The Pro controller fits well in the hand, and the larger buttons and joysticks offer a higher level of accuracy when compared to the Joy-Cons. Plus it still has motion controls and HD Rumble, so you can use it for things like aiming Link’s bow or boosting in Mario Kart.

Coming from the Joy-Cons, we noticed the buttons on the Pro controller have much more travel, so it took some getting used to, but after spending some time with it, it was hard to go back to the Joy-Cons, especially when playing in docked mode.

The pro controller comes in at $60 making it $10 cheaper than a set of Joy-Cons, but it’s more expensive than both PS4 and Xbox One controllers.

As Nintendo delves more into open world games like Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey, people are playing their Switch more often and for longer. If you use your Switch for some casual sessions of Mario Kart, the Joy-Cons are probably just fine, but if you are playing games for hours at a time, the pro controller is well built and will make those long play sessions even better.
