Transcript[edit | edit source]

The LaCie d2 Thunderbolt 3 drive. It claims to be “The perfect complement to SSD-based laptops and all-in-one computers.” with “performance up to 240MB/s for cutting-edge creative workflows.”

The drive has 3 ports on the back: a USB 3.1 port as well as 2 thunderbolt 3 ports all using the USB-C form factor. It uses an enterprise-class drive and comes in 6, 8, and 10 TB configurations starting at $350.

The main body of the drive is machined from a single piece of aluminum, and the mostly grey design makes it fit into many office environments, but the large blue light on the front makes it clear this drive is a LaCie.

LaCie boasts on their website about the “universal compatibility” of this drive due to its Thunderbolt 3 port. Thunderbolt 3 is a standard supported by both Mac and PC. It is backwards compatible so it works with Thunderbolt 1 and 2, as well as USB 3.0, as long as you have the right cables.

Thunderbolt 3 also supports daisy chaining meaning that you could connect multiple LaCie drives together, as well as other accessories like displays and keyboards, while only having one cable going to your computer.

The d2 requires external power which enables it to use a larger 3.5 inch drive for faster transfer speeds, and it will charge USB-C compatible devices with up to 15 Watts of power. This will allow smaller computers to stay charged while the drive is connected. But, if portability is something you’re looking for, an unpowered drive might be a better option.

On their site, LaCie claims you can transfer 64GB of files to a Thunderbolt 3 device in 5 minutes; our testing found that to be not only true but an under exaggeration. The drive could consistently transfer files to and from the computer at nearly 15GB a minute, so transferring large video files was no problem.

Because it uses the enterprise-class Seagate BariCuda Pro drives, the LaCie d2 drive comes with a 5 year warranty with Rescue Data Recovery Services included at no extra charge, so you can trust that your data will be safe.

If you need more than just a portable hard drive but want something smaller than a full network attached storage solution, the LaCie d2 Thunderbolt 3 drive is a happy medium offering quick transfer speeds and a large drive all within a small form factor. And Thunderbolt 3 enhances the functionality by allowing future expansion and connection for your accessories.
