Michael's Apartment

Michael Aranda: Good morning. To start of the day, we're gonna try some chocolate orange Tim Tams, sent from Australia by our friend Stephanie. (Michael and Katelyn Salem each take a bite of a Tim Tam). It's kind of rich. I couldn't eat a lot of them, but good thing there's only five.

Katelyn Salem: Have you ever had the, that chocolate oranges. The chocolate that's in the shape of an orange and it tastes like chocolate orange?

Michael: Mmmhmm.

Katelyn: I think this is even stronger than that.

Michael: Mmmhmm.

(Michael descends the stairs outside his apartment and there is some loud noise)

Michael: I don't know what it is, but there is a very loud thing happening right now. Anyway, I'm heading into the office to shoot some SciShow Quick Questions.

EcoGeek Office

Michael: We just shot three episodes of SciShow and I learned I have a hard time saying the word agglutinogen.

Stefan Chin: I think everyone has a hard time saying agglutinogen.

Michael: Agglutinogen. Agglutinogen.

Buffalo Wild Wings

(Michael points the camera at Danni, who brings up her hand to cover her face. The camera then pans to Matt Gaydos, Tim Thomas, a persona cross from Tim,Valerie Barr, Kristen Franklin and Stefan Chin.)

Michael: We got the whole family together for wing night.

Matt Gaydos: Hey! (camera pushes in on his face) Mmm, too close. (camera pulls back) Eh.

(People are sharing a cookie pie style dessert)

Valeria Barr: This is going to kill me.

Matt: You have to show their's for comparison.

(The camera focuses in on Tim's cookie pie dessert, which is half eaten, but still has four scoops of ice cream on it)

Michael: You eating that all by yourself?

Tim Thomas: It was bigger than I expected. If you know what I mean.

(Matt takes a spoonful of ice cream from his dessert)

Michael: Oh yeah

(Michael pans the camera back across the table and to a cut out of the Heineken beer guy)

McDonald's

Stefan: We're at McDonald's....getting drunk.

Michael: On what?

Stefan: Uh, diet Dr. Pepper.

Valerie: DP.

Stefan: Aka, DP.

Michael: DP?

Matt: DDP.

Michael: DDP?

Stefan: Aka, DDP.

(Kristen throws something directly at the camera lens)

Michael: Wow!

Michael's Apartment

Michael: I have kind of a lot of footage from yesterday's vlog and, in an effort to speed up the editing process on it, rather than using the YouTube Capture app on my phone like I usually do, I took the time to copy over all of the footage from my phone over to the computer and I was going to edit it like I would any other video in Premier Pro. After bringing all the footage into Premier and attempting to cut the first few seconds of it, I realized that the audio and the video weren't staying in sync with each other over the course of the video. And I just probably like 20 minutes of digging through forum posts with people having the same problem. And apparently, the iPhone shoots video with a variable frame rate, depending on how much light is available in the shot. So if I have a lot of light like this (Michael moves camera up nearer towards Katelyn's desk lamp) than it will be shooter at a faster frame rate than if I'm in a dark part of the room. So, for some reason Premier can't handle that and it de-syncs the audio and the video. Which makes me really sad because I just wasted like an hour trying to save time. Eugh. The thing that bothers me the most about trying to edit video on the phone is that I haven't seen a program that lets you edit with frame specific accuracy like you can on the computer. Um, you kind of just have to move your finger and then let go and see if it cut in the right place. And if it didn't, you just have to move it a little bit more and see if it's in the right place. And it's just, it's really annoying. So if any of you know of an editing program that works on the iPhone, that lets you do frame accurate, uh, in and out points for editing. I would love to hear about it.

It took me almost two hours to edit that video, but it's online now, so that's good. I just really don't like the YoutTube capture app. I really, really don't.

(Michael begins to edit a crash course video. In the video, Hank Green wonders why people make dumb decisions)

Outside Michael's Apartment

Michael: It's kind of ominously windy out here.

Michael's Ford Mustang

Michael: That's the guy driving away right there. He's the one who throws the newspapers up on top of the thing. I just saw him throw two newspapers up there. He didn't miss this time though. It's 3:30 in the morning and you know what that means. It's time to take a little break from working on that Crash Course sound. It's time to go to the gas station and get some delicious drinks.

Outside the gas station

Michael: I have acquired Powerade Zero lemon lime. The best flavor.

(An American Flag ripples in the wind)

Michael: That flag is going crazy.

Michael's Apartment

Michael: If you've ever heard the term clipping in reference to audio, this is what it looks like when the audio gets clipped. You can see it's just a flat line. Let's just say the computer can save the loudness of a sound between 0 and 100. If the loudness of the actual sound source would be at, say, 104, the computer doesn't have that number, so it still just clips it down to 100. So what happened here was that Hank was louder than the camera was able to capture, so it just clipped his audio down to the maximum level it could encode. The end result is that you get something that sounds a little bit distorted. (Michael plays the short clip of Hank speaking). Unfortunately, once that happens, there's not a lot that you can do to fix it. In this case, the clipping isn't too bad. Most people probably won't even notice it.
