NerdCon: Nerdfighteria

Arandanauts: Hi! We’re at Nerdcon and you’re watching WhatImDoingRightNow!

(The group cheers.)

("Intro" plays over the opening title screen.)

Potbelly – 11:41 AM EST

(The camera shows the sign hanging outside.)

Michael Aranda: Today I’m here to right a wrong.

(Nathalie Fadel laughs.)

(Michael, Nathalie, and Katelyn Salem sit at the window counter with their sandwiches.)

Michael: Yes! Nathalie, thank you for joining me on this momentous occasion.

Nathalie: Of course!

Michael: This is your first Potbelly?

Nathalie: This is my first Potbelly!

Michael: Thank you for letting me join you on this momentous occasion.

(The camera turns to Katelyn at Michael's right.)

Katelyn.

Katelyn Salem: Are you happy boy?

Michael: I am a happy boy.

(The wrapping of Michael's sandwich lays open with only a few remnants of food left.)

Yes! Yes! Ugh!

(Michael crinkles up the wrapping and throws it back down on the counter. Nathalie laughs.)

Katelyn: Are you gonna get another one to go?

(A pickle lays on the back edge of the counter next to the window.)

Michael: Oh, my pickle flew out.

Katelyn : Ew.

(Nathalie laughs.)

Nathalie: Ew.

Michael: How was it?

Nathalie: It was pretty good.

(Michael holds up his left hand.)

Michael: Out of five stars, how many would you give it?

Nathalie: Would give it like a three and a half.

(Michael starts to hold up three fingers with his left hand, then switches which hand is holding the camera and shows his right hand, which has stitches in the middle and ring fingers. The tip is missing from his middle finger.)

Michael: I guess I could just use my partial finger.

(Nathalie laughs.)

Katelyn: Ew, gross.

Nathalie: Yeah.

Michael: It’s three point nine stars.

(Nathalie laughs.)

Hynes Convention Center – 1:02 PM EST

(Michael stands in a large crowd of people.)

Michael: With the Potbelly sandwich out of the way, I’ve made it to the Complexly meetup. There’s a bunch of people here waiting to talk to people who work at Complexly.

(Michael looks around the room to point to each person as he says their name.)

Like Alyssa and Matt and Ceri and Lou and, uh... Jessi... and Caitlin is somewhere... Caitlin and... Emily Graslie is over there. She doesn’t really work for Complexly.

(Matthew Gaydos starts to wave at Michael from behind him before Michael turns toward him. Matt waves directly in front of the camera.)

Hi. Hi.

Matt: Hi.

Michael: Does this vlog have enough Matthew Gaydos?

(The camera gets really close to Matt's eyes.)

Matt: That’s enough.

The Influence and Impact of the Vlogbrothers Panel

Evan Puschak: Thank you f—to all my guests for being here, um, I’m moderating this panel. My name is Evan. I do a show called, uh... The Nerdwriter, um... and—

Josh Sundquist: Oh you’re The Nerdwriter?

Evan: (Dramaticly) Woooah.

(People from the audience laugh.)

Josh just figured out I’m The Nerdwriter.

Josh: What!?

Evan: This is—

Josh: For real?

Evan: Yeah!

Sheraton Boston Hotel – 3:50 PM EST

Michael: Okay, I just finished all my panels for the day. I now have to get dressed into my—

(Michael slaps his chest.)

—SciShow Quiz Show suit. Because we’ve got a live SciShow Quiz Show starting in just over half an hour.

Closing Ceremony

Michael: (Whispering) This is backstage. We’re about to do our SciShow Quiz Show live. John is currently on stage giving a talk. We have my script.

(The camera is in the audience facing the stage, where Michael Aranda stands in the middle of two teams. On the left are Evan Puschak, Michael Buckley, Hank Green, Dr. Shini Somara, Jessi Knudsen-Castañeda, and George Watsky. On the right, Aaron Yonda, Hannah Hart, Dr. Lindsey Doe, Jonathan Carlin, and Charlie McDonnell. The camera switches between this position and an above view from the balcony several times throughout the scene.)

Michael Aranda: Next up we’ve got George Watsky vs. Aaron Yonda.

(George and Aaron walk up to Michael. The audience cheers. Michael turns to Aaron on his left.)

Michael Aranda: If you and I got married, neither of our last names would change very much.

(The crowd laughs.)

Aaron Yonda: A—Are you asking?

(The crowd laughs. Michael gets down on one knee in front of Aaron.)

George Watsky: Oh my God!

(George claps as the crowd goes wild.)

Michael Aranda: If you get this question right I’ll marry you.

(The audience laughs.)

Michael Buckley: (From off-mic) I'm ordained!

George: Alright, I’m purposefully gonna flunk this question.

(Michael Aranda and the audience laugh.)

George: The answer is Q.

(The audience laughs.)

Michael Aranda: Most plants get all the important nutrients they need, like nitrogen, from the soil, but carnivorous plants survive by trapping other things, from insects to amphibians. A pitcher plant, for example, is basically a cup of sweet smelling nectar that’s full of digestive enzymes and bacteria. Some pitcher plants dine on an unusual delicacy though. What is it? Fruit, fallen leaves, animal poop, or chunks of tree bark.

(Aaron makes a buzzer noise.)

Aaron: C, animal poop.

(A chime sounds. The audience goes wild.)

Michael Aranda: Will you marry me?

(Michael Aranda and Aaron hug.)

George: Congratulations! (Imitating the wedding march) Duh-nuh-da-na.

Aaron: I never expected to go home with a... Wait, are you wife or husband?

Michael Aranda: Yes!

Aaron: Yes, okay good.

(The audience laughs.)

George: Amazing.

(Michael Aranda is backstage again.)

Michael Aranda: That was a lot of fun. I wouldn’t mind doing more live SciShow Quiz Shows in the future.

Sheraton Boston Hotel – 5:59 PM EST

(The camera is on a table facing the window. The lights are off and Michael's silhouette walks toward the window, sits down, and puts on it's shoes.)

Michael: Okay. I just changed back out of my suit. I just need to put some shoes on. And then I’m gonna head down stairs... to the booth, which should be closing up right now. It’ll be interesting to see how much stuff we sold over the weekend. And then hopefully we’ll get some food because I’m hungry. Nathalie texted me saying she’s hungry. If you remember, a few months ago I met up with Allie Knight. She’s a truck driver who lives in Missoula. She’s here at this event so I’m hoping she can also join us for dinner.

(Michael walks down the hallway to the elevator.)

This event have been crazy enough that I feel like I haven't gotten a chance to really talk to you guys during this thing. I think per— Oh, I forgot my watch. I need to go get my watch. I think during NerdCon, I had more events to do per hour of event time compared to VidCon. It felt much busier than VidCon. And, you know, VidCon is not, not busy. Okay. Got my watch. Now I can tell what time it is. I’m heading downstairs.

(Michael stands in the elevator. You can see him holding his phone on a tripod in the mirrors on the elevator walls.)

Aside from it being busy, this event was a lot of fun. I think because it was smaller and more intimate, it aloud much more interaction with people. Especially because at VidCon security is so intense.

(Michael leaves the elevator and walks through the lobby.)

If you’re a featured creator at VidCon, they don’t really like you talking as much to people in public areas because you create a hazard when, like, groups form. The fire department gets angry. But here it’s small enough that there are a lot of opportunities to talk to people. Just have impromptu conversations that are really nice. It looks like, uh, NerdCon must’ve just let out cause there’s a bunch of people coming through the doors.

(Ceri Riley sits on a bench the wraps around a large planter.)

I see a Ceri Riley.

Ceri: Hi Michael Aranda.

Michael: Hi.

Unknown Man: Hello, Michael!

Michael: Hello!

Unknown Man: How are you?

Michael: Good. How are you? (To Ceri) Are you working?

Ceri: I was.

Michael: I’m gonna go to the booth to help them tear down and then... get food.

Ceri: Okay.

Woman: There’s Michael again!

(Michael turns to a group of people walking past.)

Michael: Hi! Bye!

Hynes Convention Center

Michael: Ceri.

Ceri: Yes.

Michael: What do you think of the idea that maybe we shouldn’t have stayed up super late playing Terraria last night?

Ceri: Umm... I think...

(Michael and Ceri walk past a group of people who are singing off of pieces of paper.)

Michael: There appears to be an impromptu sing along happening over there.

Ceri: I think maybe we shouldn’t have stayed up so late playing Terraria because—

Michael: Oh.

Ceri: —I’m very tired now.

Michael: Yeah.

(Michael and Ceri ride up an escalator.)

So the event is over now and people are exiting the expo hall.

NerdCon Expo Hall

Michael: There’s still people in here. I didn’t expect there to be people in here still.

(Abi Rein, Charlee Hoffman, Katelyn, and Todd Williams are taking down the booth.)

How’s it going?

Abi Rein: Going well.

Katelyn: Good.

Michael: Taking stuff down?

So Mr. Todd.

Todd: Huh.

Michael: What did our sales come to?

Todd Williams: Uh huh.

Michael: Huh.

Todd: Uh huh.

Michael: Huh. 600 something, today?

Todd: N—no.

Michael: In total.

Todd: Yeah.

Katelyn: Wait, no. Just, just hold on. Today, 681.

Michael: Okay.

Katelyn: 700 yesterday.

Michael: So... 13 hundred-ish... over the whole weekend? Todd! That will pay for almost one week of production at our company.

(Katelyn snickers.)

Todd: Yeeeeah.

(Michael laughs.)

Todd: It’s good that, uh... we have people that come to support us and people learned all about Kate Tectonics—

Michael: Yeah, yeah.

Todd: —and the fun things we do here.

(The camera points at Ceri and swings around to show a booth next to the Synema Studios booth.)

Michael: I just got a question from the people over here at Night Shift Comics—

Ceri: Okay.

Michael: —about, if everybody in the world painted their roof white would that reflect enough energy that, uh, it would make any sort of difference.

Ceri: I don’t know. I feel like the problem is the amount of energy getting in. So, there is so much to do with, like, the gases scattering light that the color of the earth’s surface, I don’t think, would make a significant difference. It might make some difference, if the amount of light—

Jared Forbes: 'Cause I know on a personal level if you have a white roof, um, your heating and cooling is slightly cheaper if you have a black roof.

Ceri: The amount of, like, civilization on earth is still, like, a fraction of the entire surface of the earth. Like, you still have—most of the earth is ocean or like uninhabit territories.

Michael: And then I assume there’s also... The amount of energy that has to go into creating all of that paint is probably not negligible...

Ceri: Yeah!

Jared: It’s just one of those things that—it’s been in my mind, because...

(Michael laughs.)

Jared: It’s just one of those, like, random pseudo-science questions. Just like oh, we have actual science people that might be able to answer that.

Michael: Yeah.

Ceri: That’s usually wher—where my job comes in.

Michael: That’s Ceri.

The booths are all comin’ down. Here’s Travis, like a boss.

Travis Morss: Hiiii.

Michael: Can I see your tattoo?

Travis: Which one?

Michael: You have multiple?

(Travis pulls up the sleeve on his left arm.)

Travis: Uhh...

Michael: I only knew about this 3D tattoo.

Travis: Yes. It's—So, it’s a 3D rocket.

Hynes Convention Center

Michael: Okay. We’ve gathered a group of people; we’re gonna go get pizza. We’ve been joined by Allie Knight, youtube.com/allieknight. I spoke about her... some number of months ago when we went to Chipotle. She does, uh.. trucking vlogs!

Allie: It’s so unique. I’m in this weird part of YouTube that nobody talks about.

Uno Pizzeria & Grill – 6:58 PM EST

(The camera is held up at the end of the table. Abi, Nathalie, Todd, and Nathan Hutchcraft sit in frame.)

Todd: Oh, hi!

(The camera shows a menu; Michael points to a picture.)

Michael: I would also like to do the Whole Hog Burger.

(The camera pans across a large plate with a burger and a lot of fries on it.)

Look how ridiculous this amount of food is that I got!

(The camera is held up to show the table again.)

How do you feel about your food, Todd?

(Todd tries to pick up his plate, but it's hot. He manages to pick it up over his head to show the camera.)

Todd: Ah!

(Rose Reynolds laughs.)

(The camera is placed next to the table behind Ceri and Allie and showing Michael, Katelyn, and Rose.)

Michael: Alright. This burger is very large.

(Rose giggles.)

Rose Reynolds: She’s like..

Michael: (To Katelyn) This is very good!

Katelyn: It’s got some thick, uh... bacon on it. What’s on top of the burger?

Michael: I don’t know! I’m just eating it!

Boylston Street

(Michael holds his hand up towards Todd. Todd excitedly shuffles backwards away from Michael and holds out his hand. He does a small, in place charge up run and then moves quickly at Michael, high-fiving him when he reaches him.)

Michael: D’ahh! Woah, boy!

Todd: That’s—that’s like, uh... That’s like five Todd-Fives.

Michael: So I’m gonna let you in on a little secret. It was... pretty difficult for me to fit into my suit today. So I—I need to, uh, finish up today by having a nice little shake. But tomorrow! I diet!

Shake Shack

Michael: Alright. Here’s the Shake Shack. Gotta get a nice delicious shake, so that when I’m on this diet... it will have all been worth it.

(Everyone stands in line.)

Michael: Nathalie.

Nathalie: Mm?

Michael: How do you feel about NerdCon?

Nathalie: I loved it. I had a great time!

Michael: That’s good.

Nathalie: Mhm. How about you?

Michael: I loved it. I had a great time.

Nathalie: Are you making fun of me?!

(Allie giggles.)

Michael: Allie Knight!

Allie: Yes!

Michael: How did you feel about NerdCon?

Allie: I like NerdCon a lot better than I like VidCon.

Michael: Ooohh!

Nathalie: Saaaaame!

Michael: Oh!

Allie: I think the only problem—

Michael: Is that a— (To Nathan) Did you feel the same way?

(Nathan holds up his camera.)

Nathan: Michael, how do you feel about NerdCon?

(Nathan and Nathalie laugh.)

Rose: There was a lot of aspects about it that were definitely better than VidCon. The intimacy...

Allie: VidCon is just so... big!

Michael: It’s so big.

Rose: The intimacy, and the fact that we’re all apart of the same fandom.

Michael: Abi.

Abi: Yeah!

Michael: How did you feel about NerdCon?

Abi: I had an absolute blast! It was great!

Michael: Do you feel like NerdCon... does a better job of, uh... engaging with community than VidCon does?

Abi: Yeah. I felt like it was an environment that leant itself better.

Michael: Ceri.

(Nathalie and Allie laugh.)

Michael: What kinda shake are you gonna get?

Ceri: I’m gonna get a... Purple Cow float.

Michael: Oh, dang!

Rose: Woah!

Michael: I had a peanut butter and strawberry shake, and it was worth... every calorie.

(Michael slurps up the last bit of his shake through a straw.)

Sheraton Boston Hotel

(The camera is on the floor in a hallway. Allie, Ceri, Michael, Abi, and Katelyn walk towards it.)

Michael: Hey look at this camera right here! How’d that get right here?

(Katelyn crouches lower and lower as she walks toward the camera to try to stay in frame.)

Allie: Dude, you should take that! That might be worth money.

Michael: I’m taking this camera!

9:25 PM EST

(Michael and Katelyn walk out of the elevator.)

Michael: Okay... I’m at, like, two percent battery on my phone. My phone is almost full from the footage from today. So I’m gonna go back to the room, charge the phone, dump the footage, maybe fall asleep? Maybe not fall asleep. I’m very tired, but I also wanna play Terraria.

("Outro" plays over the end screen.)
