Transcript[edit | edit source]

Byron in London, England

Laura Knüppel: I’m Laura.

Nylah Khan: I’m Nylah.

Laura: And we feel very American right now because we had freakshakes and burgers.

Nylah: But you’re about to watch a real life American. Because you’re watching,

Laura: WhatI’mDoingRightNow.

("Intro" plays over the opening title screen.)

Sheraton Boston Hotel – 10:12 AM EST

(Michael Aranda and Katelyn Salem are in their hotel room; the camera sits across the room pointing at them. Michael sits at a table with a towel across his shoulders. Katelyn is putting on gloves and preparing to dye Michael's blonde stripe.)

Michael: You smell like Cheetos.

(Katelyn laughs.)

Katelyn: Since I have no guide for your blonde stripe anymore, I need to make sure I put it back in the right spot.

(Katelyn starts clipping down Michael's hair as he works on his laptop.)

Michael: There’s a lot going on today. And we’re starting with re-bleaching the blonde stripe. My hair had just been black for, a couple months now? Is that right?

Katelyn: Yeah.

Michael: But, you know, since today is Nerdcon: Nerdfighteria it seemed like a good day to make sure that the blonde stripe was back.

Katelyn: So now I need to start from scratch. I usually have a guide... by the blonde tips... but now I have to redraw the path. I guess that’s it. Let’s get bleachin’.

Michael: Should that be my new catch phrase?

(Katelyn chuckles.)

Katelyn & Michael: Let’s get bleachin’.

(Katelyn starts to bleach the tips of Michael's hair.)

Michael: I didn’t sleep at all two night ago, and then the only sleep yesterday that I got was... on the plane flights between Missoula and Minneapolis and then Minneapolis and Boston. So... I’m going to guess I got in the neighborhood of... three or four uncomfortable hours of sleep. So last night I feel like I slept pretty hard but, it doesn’t feel like it was long enough.

Katelyn: Okay. I’m going to let the tips go, before I do the parts closer to your head because the heat from your scalp is going to make... that go faster.

(The camera is now in front of and above Michael to show the top of his head.)

Michael: While I was sleeping I had another vlog rendering from the 21st of December. So now that is uploaded and I’m sending it to our team who does transcripts. And those transcripts get used to make sure these videos have captions before they go live.

(Katelyn pretends to sprinkle Cheeto dust into Michael's hair.)

Katelyn: I could just use Cheeto cheese and we could give you an orange stripe.

Michael: No... (Fake whining) Nooo.

Katelyn: But then your hair would be cool and tasty.

Michael: Nooo.

(Katelyn chuckles.)

Michael: That’s not my aesthetic. Boston is two hours ahead of Missoula so I keep getting confused. Here, it is 10:30 right now. But my computer thinks it’s 8:30. After this bleaching thing is done I have a panel called What Is a Nerdfighter? at 2:30 today. And then I’m doing a SciShow Q&A at 4 o’clock today. So, two things to go to, and then, I don’t know what’s after that. Maybe a trip to Potbelly?

Katelyn: Mhmm.

Okay.

(Katelyn starts to dye the base of Michael's hair.)

Oh. I got a little bit of Cheeto cheese in your hair. I hope that’s okay.

Michael: I’m reading a Reddit thread right now in the history subreddit. The question is, “Has any one individual ever saved the world, so to speak?” And there’s this one guy named Stanislav Petrov. “In 1983, he was the duty officer at the command center for the Oko nuclear early-warning system when the system reported that a missile had been launched from the United States, followed up by five more. Petrov judged the reports to be a false alarm, and his decision is credited with having prevented an erroneous retaliatory attack on the United States and its NATO allies that could have resulted in large-scale nuclear war. Investigation later confirmed that the Soviet satellite warning system had indeed malfunctioned.” I guess that’s why you want smart people in certain positions sometimes.

Katelyn: And... people without, uh... anger management issues.

(Michael holds his phone up in front of the bathroom mirror, showing his hair with the chemicals still in it while the water runs in the background.)

Michael: It looks pretty bleached. I’m going to wash it out.

(Michael now holds his phone up in front of the mirror in the bedroom, showing off his blonde stripe.)

Alright, I did the thing. Now it’s time to find food.

(Dance music plays over a One Food Later screen.)

Boylston Street – 12:41 PM EST

Michael: All the convention stuff is happening down at the Hynes Convention Center right there.

Hynes Convention Center

(People talk in the hallway as Michael walks past them. Someone recognizes and waves at Michael. He walks into the expo hall.)

NerdCon Expo Hall

Michael: This is the NerdCon Exposition Hall. There’s a bunch of people hawking their goods. I don’t know where my booth is. So, I’m going to try to find that.

(A girl waves at Michael.)

Michael: Hello.

Girl: Hi!

(Michael walks up to the Synema Studios booth. Katelyn and Charlee Hoffman are standing behind the table selling merch.)

Michael: Oh, here we go!

Charlee Hoffman: Hi!

Michael: Hi!

Katelyn: Hi!

(Michael shows off the merch list hanging on the back of the booth.)

Michael: We’ve got Lincoln Shirts and Queen Shirts and Responsible People Shirts. And hoodies. All kinds of posters. Kate Tectonics pencils.

(Katelyn processes someone's payment as two people look through her box of mineral jewelry. She talks with Elise Ansel, who is standing off to the side.)

Elise: I am so freaking excited for Kate Tectonics.

Katelyn: Are you?

Elise: I am so, so excited!

Katelyn: Good!

Michael: We also have a sign for “Street Pass Here”. So if people have their DSes I can get some StreetPasses!

(Michael shows the screen on his 3DS.)

That one looks like Todd. “Toddly from the United States.” You’re not from a—a state? You’re just from “United States”? We’ve met five times, Todd.

What Is a Nerdfighter? Panel

(Michael sits at a table on stage for a panel.)

Michael: The first panel that I'm on today is, uh... What Is a Nerdfighter? We have Charlie McDonnell.

(Charlie sits to Michael's left and gives a wave to the camera. Ahsante Bean and Leslie Datsis sit beyond him.)

Uh, and some other people I have not met yet.

(The camera points to Michael's left at Victoria Bongiorno.)

We have Victoria. And we have all these nice people out here.

(The camera points to the audience and they cheer.)

Leslie: Think about what being a Nerdfighter means to you. And think about how you can work with people in your local communities. Maybe? Or maybe start something in your own local community.

(Dance music plays over a One Nerdfighter Panel Later screen.)

Leslie: Thanks for all coming. Thank you.

(The audience cheers and applauds.)

Hynes Convention Center

(Michael films Craig Benzine filming Emily Graslie for his main stage video.)

Craig: Okay, now, c—huge celebration.

Emily: Like, similar to the first one?

Craig: Yeah, but even bigger because I—I’ve succeeded.

Emily: Yeah! Craig! Y—you won it! The thing that you were gonna win but already won it. I knew you could do it!

Michael: We’re watching the magic being maaaaade.

SciShow Q&A

(Michael walks around backstage.)

Michael: Next up, we’ve got a SciShow Q&A Panel. With these nice SciShow people.

(Michael points the camera around the curtain toward the seats.)

And all these people over here are gonna watch us. We’ve also got Sarah Meismer and Looooou. This is gonna be exciting.

(The audience cheers as they walk on stage and the SciShow theme song plays.)

Michael: Wow. SciShow intro and everything.

(Dance music plays over a One SciShow Panel Later screen.)

Lou Winkler: Thanks, guys!

Caitlin Hofmeister: Thank you!

(The audience claps and cheers. The SciShow theme song plays again.)

Michael: That was fun! We answered lots of questions. I think it might be, uh... dinner time. Nom, nom, nom.

NerdCon Expo Hall – 6:04 PM EST

Michael Aranda: Okay. It’s now six o’clock. Our booth just closed. Did we sell lots of things?

Katelyn: I sold lots of things. I think I sold as much of my stuff as you sold of your stuff.

Michael Aranda: That’s exciting.

Katelyn: Yeah.

Michael Morgan: And that's just day one.

Michael Aranda: That’s day one.

(Michael points the camera at Abi Rein and Charlee.)

Thanks for helping me sell things today.

Abi: Yeah.

(Todd gets really close to the camera with a straight face. Michael and Charlee laugh.)

(A poster hangs on the wall. It reads "Lost Cat. If found email lostwizardcat@gmail.com". In the middle is a drawing of a cat wearing round glasses and a T-shirt that says "harry purrey", with a lightening bolt scar on its forehead, and holding a wand.)

Michael: What does this mean? Lost cat?

Sheraton Boston Hotel

(Ethereal electronic cords play over a timelapse out the window of Michael's hotel room. The sun goes down and lights turn on across the city.)

Hynes Convention Center

(The camera is set up near a window showing a group of people standing around talking, among them Abi, Charlee, Elise, Katelyn, and Todd. Michael walks toward the camera along the window.)

Michael: So right now we’re having a meet-up, uh, in this hallway for people who watch the vlogs. I think we just caught naiadryade unaware that we were filming. These are all of the people that showed up to the meetup. Hi. This is super meta, but behind me right now they’re filming an intro for the vlog.

(Michael films himself holding up Abi's camera to film the intro.)

It’s rollin’!

Abi: 3, 2, 1...

All: Hi! We’re at NerdCon! And you’re watching WhatImDoingRightNow! Wooooooo!

Michael: That’s how the magic is made. I’m gonna go get food now. Thank you for coming! Bye!

Sheraton Boston Hotel – 7:00 PM EST

(Michael walks through the loud lobby with Nathalie Fadel, Ceri Riley, Katelyn, Abi, Todd, and Charlie.)

Michael: If you've been watching the vlog for a while now, you’ll remember Nathalie. I stayed with Nathalie last time I came to Boston in 2015 when I went to Mysterium.

b.good

Michael: Uh... Potbelly is closed, which is where we were gonna go. But instead we’ve ended up at b.good. I’ve never been here before, so I hope this is good.

Washington Street

Michael: Charlie just pointed this out, but we’ve got some papyrus!

J.P. Licks

Michael: We went to Cold Stone, but Cold Stone only had, like, three flavors of ice cream available. So now we decided to come to J.P. Licks.

Todd: What does he lick?

Michael: Utters? I don’t know. (To Katelyn) What?

Katelyn: Do you want an Oreo Cookie Ball?

Michael: What is an Oreo Cookie Ball?

Katelyn: I don’t know.

Abi: Oreo blended with cream cheese covered in dark chocolate and sprinkles!

(The camera pans across the top of the ice cream display showing the employees working. Michael points at the menu on the wall.)

Michael: I’m getting the Cookies ‘n’ Cake Batter. As a milkshake.

(Charlie is holding his and Michael's 3DSes and waving them around each other.)

We’re trying to get my DS and Charlie’s DS to StreetPass each other, but it’s not... (laughing) working.

Todd: I mean I—

Michael: Todd got a Charlie.

Todd: I got a Charlie.

Michael: Did you get a Todd?

Charlie: I don’t think I did.

(Ceri laughs.)

Michael: That’s weird.

(The two 3DSes are stacked on top of each other the the table. Michael opens and closes his left hand at them as if casting a spell. Abi laughs.)

Outside on the Patio

(Michael, Todd, and Charlie stand on different sides of the patio.)

Michael: Okay, Charlie’s hypothesis is that we need to actually physically pass each other for this to work. Okay, here we go.

(The three exaggeratedly walk toward and past each other.)

Op, just passing each other like—like people do. Aaand nothing. Nothing. It didn’t happen.

(Abi laughs.)

(Laughing) Charlie.

Charlie: It's not meant to be.

Michael: Ceri it’s raining.

Ceri Riley: It’s raining so haaard. I don’t like it.

Michael: I guess it’s time to walk in the rain. (Laughing) Charlie. You have no hood.

Charlie: I don’t have a hood. My hoodie is—and my parka coat are both in my hotel room.

(Charlie pulls the back of his sweater up over his head. Everyone laughs.)

Michael: Okay. If only we still had Nathalie and her umbrella. It’s so rainy!

Massachusetts Avenue

Charlie: Can we do something that's not this?

(Todd and Abi laugh.)

Michael: It’s so... It’s so wet. It was such a nice day earlier!

Abi: (Laughing) It was so nice! What happened?

Todd: I can't even see out of my glasses.

(Todd wipes off his glasses with his index finger.)

Sheraton Boston Hotel – 10:12 PM EST

(Michael, Todd, Katelyn, and Ceri are in their hotel room.)

Michael: Toddly. After all that... I still didn’t get a frickin’ StreetPass from Charlie.

Todd: I’m sorry, man. I wish I had words for ya.

Michael: Uuuuugh!

("Outro" plays over the end screen.)
