Nick's Apartment:
Michael: We're taking a break from Battlestar Galactica to play Small World.
(Stefan sings "It's a Small World" in the background.)
Michael: We have Katelyn and Nick and Stefan and Kristen and Abby.
Katelyn: Smiley face! Smiley!
Nick: Abby! Oh you're so cute.
Stefan: This is Small World. It's a game of te-te-terri-te-torial control. So basically there are... shh... there are races: trolls and sorcerors and skeletons, which I guess... are they races or species? Schpecies?
Nick: Species. I would say species.
Stefan: So, and then there's...
Michael: Races. It says races.
Stefan: It says races, but they're, but eh... it's questionable. Um, so this is the first in line and so you, at the beginning of the game, you're going to choose a race. Um, and so if you choose, 'cause these are random combinations of a trait and then the race, and each thing has... Like each race has an ability and then the traits have something that they allow you to do. Um, and so the combination... so there's different combinations, but you can choose any of them, but if you... like if you want this one, then you have to put a coin here because you're skipping over it, if that makes sense. And then if you want to choose this one, then you have to put a coin on each of these, um to choose this one. Um so, but we're gonna go around and choose races, and then you'll get tokens to go, um, to go with that. And then, on your turn, oh and so in this game there's going to be eight turns. So we'll go around eight times. And on your turn, you're just going to take all the little tokens that you have available. And then you're gonna conquer territories starting with a border, and then expanding from there, sometimes depending on what kind of... like some of them are flying, and so they can go wherever, but... So the base cost to conquer a territory is two troops, and then plus one for any piece of cardboard that's already on here. So like, the mountains have a piece of cardboard just to indicate that the terrain is a little more difficult to conquer, and so the mountains will always cost an extra one to conquer. Um, and then if there's like... like if there's another race who had two guys here, then it would cost four to conquer.
Nick: So there's some tokens that are supposed to go on here still.
Stefan: Yeah, yeah. There's some like neutral tribes that show up. But, um, that's basically it. And then on the last one, as long as you have at least one left, you can try to conquer a territory using this die to give you a certain number of reinforcements. In this case, you get nothing. And then similar to Risk, you can redistribute your forces at the end of your turn, and then you collect one gold for each territory that you control. And gold is the points at the end.
Kristen: So what's the advantage of being a giant?
Stefan: So there's heroic giants.
Michael: Do you want to be a heroic giant, swahmp trolls...
(laughter)
Kristen: I'm pretty sure that's not how that's pronounced.
Michael: Swahmp.
Stefan: Swahmps.
Michael: Mow-unted skellytons. Bi-vo...
Kristen: I don't even know what the f*** that word is...
Michael: ...ache-ing...
Kristen: Bi...
Michael: It's bivouacking.
Kristen: Bi-vouacking? What does bivouacking mean?
Michael: Well, bivouacking means deploy five encampments in your region... zzz... (laughter) Each encampment increases that region's defense by one.
Stefan: So basically, like, if you conquer like say these three territories, you can divide up these encampments between them which gives you extra defense.
Kristen: Okey dokey.
Stefan: Against other attacks.
Kristen: Um, I think I'm going to be the swamp troll.
Michael: Swahmp trolls? Good choice.
Kristen: That means I have to do that?
Stefan: Yep.
Michael: So Kristen took over some stuff over there. I took some stuff over here. Oh I didn't get money yet. One, two, three, four, four coins? I'll take one 5, and replace it with a 1. Okay, now it's Katelyn's turn.
Katelyn: I know what I want. It's not going to take me forever to decide.
Kristen: Nobody wants the giants.
Katelyn: I want my skeletons.
Stefan: The skellytons?
Michael: The mountain...
Stefan: Mounted.
Michael: Oh, mounted.
Katelyn: Mounted skeletons.
Michael: So mounted skeletons. They can conquer any hill or farmland region at one less than usual. Um, skeletons... skeletons... oh, during troop redeployment, take one new skeleton token from the tray for every two non-empty regions you conquered and deploy it.
Michael: I'm going to conduct a scientific experiment to see how long it is possible for this dog to play tug-of-war. What time is it?
Katelyn: 8:37
Michael: 8:37. I'm gonna say this has been going on for two minutes already. 8:35? Okay. We'll take note of the time when it ends.
Michael: What's happening in our game though?
Kristen: Um, I need to collect my monies.
Michael: We've got two turns left. Kristen needs money.
Kristen: So we got one, two...
Michael: I'm losing. Let me see your stack.
Stefan: Don't... it's so small.
Michael: Look at my stack.
Kristen: Look at my stack.
Stefan: Well... you guys don't have stacks.
Katelyn: Mine is stacked.
Kristen: Well, pile.
Michael: Oh, don't look at my things.
Michael: Abby let go of it, um, roughly 17 minutes into...
Katelyn: You can't even see that...
Stefan: Fifteen, fifteen and forty seconds.
Katelyn: ...and 38 seconds.
Michael: But I had been going for a few minutes before we started the timer.
Katelyn: Oh yeah.
Kristen: We decided it was a plus two.
Stefan: Absolutely horrible.
Michael: How many did you get?
Stefan: Two. This is bad. Um, let me count...
Michael: What you got?
Kristen: 74.
Michael: Oh! I got 71!
Katelyn: 79!
Nick: 74.
Katelyn: Stefan?
Kristen: 27.
Michael: It's down to Katelyn and Stefan.
Katelyn: Oh, I beat Stefan. I so beat Stefan.
Stefan: 61, 62, 63, 64, 65.
Michael: Katelyn wins! Woo!
Katelyn: It's them rats, 'cause I got all those rats.
Stefan: I know! I was watching you get all the money for that.
Later:
Michael: Well, so I had some ice cream from Coldstone's earlier.
Katelyn: Yes.
Michael: And then we went to Dairy Queen, and I had a Blizzard, and I had a half-pound flamethrower grill burger. Now I'm feeling a little...
Katelyn: Not good?
Stefan: Sluggish?
Nick: Like you've been shot with a tranquilizer?
Michael: No...
Kristen: You have some remorse?
Michael: I feel like I'm trying to give birth.
Nick: From what?
Michael: My abdomen.
In a car:
Michael: Somehow, we fit five people into a tiny car, and it was an adventure.
Kristen: Oh, I get to get out this side now.
Katelyn: Oh, he actually let you out.
Michael: That's... pardon me, 'scuse me. Ah no, I got it. I just need to put my foot on this thing, and I got it. Ha ha ha ha.
Walmart:
Michael: Guess where we are!
Katelyn: Ah, the smell of Walmart.
Michael: The smell of Walmart.
Stefan: What?
Michael: What are you doing, Stefan?
Stefan: I don't... I'm not doing anything! Don't look! Don't look!
Katelyn: You know the drumsticks aisle is right over there.
Stefan: Oh, Sam's Choice! Sam's Choice! Drumsticks?! They got those chocolate nuggets at the bottom. Hungh!
Michael: Have you tried the peanut butter variety?
Stefan: Yeah, they're pretty good.
Michael: Which ones are your favorite?
Stefan: Uh, caramel.
Michael: Caramel?
Stefan: Actually, I think I like the cookie-dipped better than the original caramel with the nuts.
Katelyn: I like the cookie-dipped as well.
Michael: Yeaaaah.
Michael: The super nugget!
Stefan: No, it's... it's got a bit of chocolate in the nugget.
Michael: It's got a what?
Stefan: Don't ask again!
Michael's Apartment:
Michael: I have to go to the airport in four hours to go to Chicago for some Brain Scoop fun time. So maybe I'll go to sleep now.
