The 2018 Apple iPad: It claims to “give users the ability to be even more creative and productive.” and it provides “unmatched portability, ease of use and all-day battery life.”

The 2018 iPad comes in at around 1 lb. It comes in space gray, silver, or gold with 32 or 128gb configurations.

The bezels on the side leave a good amount of room to hold the iPad without covering the screen, and the aluminum chassis is durable while keeping the device light.

The rear camera on the iPad uses an 8 megapixel sensor, the same as the iPhone 6, but with support for some newer features like Live Photos. The front camera is only 1.2 megapixels, but with support for 720p video it’s fine for using Facetime or Skype.

Apple’s primary goal with the 2018 iPad is to offer Apple Pencil support in a cheaper package. Before this, the Apple Pencil was only supported on the iPad Pro line which starts at $650. The 2018 iPad starts at $330 making it less than half the price of an iPad Pro. The Apple Pencil is an extra $100 on top of the cost of the iPad, but it has all the same functions you’d find using it on the Pro line.

This lower price point doesn’t come without compromises. It lacks the stereo speakers and the larger display on the 10.5 inch pro while still having the same weight. The display also isn’t laminated, so there is an air gap between the display and the glass which was most noticeable when using the Apple Pencil.

The battery on the 2018 iPad was nearly always enough to last through the day. Apple boasts 10 hours of use on a single charge, and even under heavier workloads, the battery in our testing regularly outlasted laptops and phones.

Outside of support for the Apple Pencil, a feature the iPad offers that you won’t find on an iPhone is multitasking. You can run two apps side-by-side, and certain apps support picture in picture meaning you can have a video hovering over whatever else you’re working on.

iPads aren’t yet at the point that they can replace laptops for everyone. For many video makers, developers, and graphic designers, the iPad lacks the software, and often times the power, to replace a full fledged computer. But as a tool for drawing, taking notes, or answering emails the 2018 iPad can be a powerful laptop companion, and for some a computer replacement.
