Transcript[edit | edit source]

Durham, North Carolina

(Merilee Nixon sits in the splits in front of a fire place.)

Merilee: Hi! I’m Merilee, and I’m from North Carolina. I’m doing my daily stretches, but you’re watching what Michael’s doing right now. Cue the whirring mechanism!

("Intro" plays over the opening title screen.)

Todd Williams' Car – 1:42 PM MST

Michael Aranda: Toddly?

Todd Williams: (Laughing) Yes?

Michael: Where are we going today?

Todd: (Laughing) We are going to a meeting, eh... for, uh... a local company who wants to potentially do some video work with us. And a—And another person who potentially wants to do some other video work with us. That’s what we’re doing.

Michael: What does this company sell?

Todd: So they—they're a—they’re a—a monthly box company? I don’t know what you would... call that. A subscription box company. They’re called Quilty. And, they... have quilt things every month. So they want some promo videos.

Michael: Yep.

Todd: Eh, I’m guessing. That’s what we’re gonna find out. Should be exciting. We’re going to their warehouse. So we should see a bunch of quilt things. Do you like quilt things?

Michael: I’ve never tried quilting, so I don’t know.

Todd: Maybe it’s a new hobby you’ll be able to pick up.

Michael: It feels a little bit like winter poked it’s head up again for a sec and was like “Hey! I’m still here!”

Todd: It was a little disappointing... t—to say—when I woke up this morning and my car was covered in snow. I wasn’t happy about that. You can see... it’s starting t—to melt a bit. But I would like it to be melted all the way.

Quilty Box

Michael: Okay. We’re here at Quilty Box. I don’t know if they want us filming inside, so I’m just going to say I’ll probably see you afterwards.

(The camera swings around and Michael points at a loading bay door with the Quilty Box logo on it.)

(Dance music plays over a One Meeting Later screen.)

Todd William's Car

Michael: Well that was interesting.

(The camera shows a box on Michael's lap. It has the Quilty Box logo on it.)

This is a Quilty Box. This is what they send out every month.

(Michael struggles to open the box with one hand, but gets it open.)

I can’t open it. They have a little thing showcasing an artist of the month, and then they have quilting supplies inside.

(Michael closes the box.)

Todd: I think it allows for... folks to get creative. When you have surprise things come in the mail you don’t know what you’re gonna do, so a lot of people probably get a little stuck sometimes thinking, “I don’t know what I—I wanna make”. When this pops up, it can give you some fresh ideas of what you wanna do.

Michael: Yeah. They are a bigger operation than I.. expected. It’s just so weird sometimes what you find out is in your own backyard.

Todd: I would never have guessed they were here—

Michael: Yeah.

Todd: —until they reached out to us.

Michael: They’ve got a big warehouse, tons of boxes stacked up. He says that they send out over 2,000 of these boxes a month.

Todd: So... And I’m sure it’s just growing.

Michael: Yeah.

Todd: Excitin’ stuff!

Michael: And hopefully... with us, we’ll help them grow even more.

Todd: (In a weird accent) Do you like to quilt? Quilty Box!

Michael: Maybe we should just have you host the videos.

Todd: Quilty Box! That’s it, that’s all I say?

(Dance music plays over a Later That Day screen.)

Synema Studio Office – 5:33 PM MST

Michael: We are having our weekly... Synema Studios meeting with these lovely people.

(Abi Rein, Kyla Pyne, and Michael Morgan are Skyping into the meeting on a laptop. Michael gestures to the laptop and then to Todd and Katelyn.)

We were just talking about how we would like to highlight creative things that people in the community are doing. If you are doing a cool thing, or if you know of someone doing a cool thing who’s a part of this community, you should probably let us know. I guess... Is there an email address that people should send stuff to or just leave it in the comments? Or what?

Todd: For right now, if you wanna send it to hello@synemastudios.com with, uh... “Doing Cool Stuff!” in the, uh... title there.

(Kyla and Abi laugh.)

Michael: Okay.

Complexly Office

(Michael walks through a lounge area where all the lights are off except for the light in Ceri Riley's office.)

Michael: Ceri why are you still here?

(Michael sits down in a chair in Ceri's office. Ceri sits at her desk at a laptop. An orange peel is flayed out on the desk next to her.)

Ceri: I’m editing... scripts.

Michael: You have an orange peel, or some kind of peel.

Ceri: It is an orange peel.

Michael: Do you wanna buy a house?

Ceri: That is what we’ve been trying to do for a little while.

Michael: I don’t know that the vlog has been... updated on this situation.

Ceri: I don’t think so. I haven’t talked about it to the vlog.

Michael: Ceri and I are trying to buy a house. One of the Patreon livestreams that we did—I think it was the one for Jaaanuuuary? You were out of town, and we went back to one of the houses to look at it while you were out of town. Was that—

Ceri: That was probably February because I was at NerdCon for 10 days.

Michael: I was at NerdCon. Oh, but you went early—

Ceri: I went early—

Michael: You— Okay, that’s right. So in February, we livestreamed while walking through one of the houses that we were looking at. So if you are a Patreon patron, you maybe knew this already. I just talked to Cindy, our realtor, about our maybe plan to put another offer down on what we’re calling WoodHouse. She says that, she already has all the paperwork stuff—We signed a thing already that she can act on our behalf. If we want to, all we have to do is say, “Yes, please make another offer at this amount”, and she’ll do that tomorrow. Should I tell her to make another offer?

Ceri: Um... I don’t know.

(Ceri laughs.)

Michael: Just—

Ceri: Maybe? Yes.

—because money amounts are weird. I’m gonna have the—the dollar amounts that I’m about to say bleeped out of this video.

Ceri: Okay.

Michael: Um...

Ceri: That makes me more comfortable.

Michael: Okay.

(Ceri and Michael laugh.)

Michael: Our initial offer was super low and then they countered at

(A yellow dollar sign on a black background appears over Michael's mouth while the Super Mario Bros coin noise is played. This happens each time.)

I told her that the math that I had been doing to calculate monthly expenses, if we were to put another offer, was at

(Super Mario Bros coin noise.)

and she suggested offering

(Super Mario Bros coin noise.)

hoping that they will counter at

(Super Mario Bros coin noise.)

Buying houses is... It's very bizarre business.

Ceri: It’s very stressful, uh... just because it is owning a big thing and spending a lot of money on this big thing. The permanence does not scare me as much anymore because people buy and sell real estate all the time.

Michael: Today Ceri and Nicole and Hank and I are shooting a.. Holy F****** Science. I was about to say what it was about, but I can’t do that yet because it’s supposed to be a surprise for Ceri and for the other people.

(There are now two laptops sitting on Ceri's desk.)

Look it! Ceri’s got two computers going on. She’s in hacking mode.

(Ceri presents the laptops with a hand flourish and then pretends to type on both computers at the same time.)

Ceri: Yes... So I can do one... one hand on each one.

Michael: Why actually do you have two computers out?

Ceri: 'Cause I started researching my Holy F****** Science topic on this one, and I didn’t want to transfer tabs. This is for work, and this one's for social spaces.

(The camera pans left to Ceri's whiteboard, where some diagrams are drawn.)

Michael: Hey, what’s all that for?

Ceri: (Feigning ignorance) Oh my gosh, I don’t know!

(Dance music plays over a Later That Day screen.)

10:17 PM MST

(Michael sits in the dark at his desk in his office.)

Michael: We just finished filming Holy F****** Science. I think it was maybe one of our best ones yet. I just really enjoyed the conversation. I’m about to hit the render button on the next vlog that’s going live. This one is from the 28th and 29th of December 2016. And then (emphasis) that means that there’s only one video left, which covers the 30th and 31st of December, in Season Six to go live. After that, the next video to go up will be from February twenty-something. So we’re about to catch up quite a bit.

Michael Aranda's Apartment — 11:22 PM MST

(The camera is placed on the kitchen counter pointing toward the living room. Michael is placing a GoPro on a head strap.)

Kelsey? How often do the things that I do, in the process of filming vlogs, embarrass you?

(Kelsey Cote is in the kitchen out of frame.)

Kelsey: Like out in public?

Michael: Yeah...

Kelsey: At first I was like, “Oh, I’m hanging out with a man who’s pointing a camera at everything. Everyone’s looking.” But now it’s kind of just whatever. Like, I mean... there’s still times when I notice people looking and they have confused looks, but...

Michael: Tonight... may...

(Michael puts the GoPro head strap on his head.)

Kelsey: No... No, no!

(Kelsey laughs as she turns to face the corner by the front door. The camera switches to the GoPro.)

Michael: May test your, uh...

(Glenn Kneebone chuckles in the background.)

your willpower.

(Kelsey turns around but has her hands covering her face.)

Kelsey: (Sob-laughing) Michael I can’t look!

(The camera switches back to the counter perspective. Michael laughs as he walks out of frame.)

Apartment Complex Fitness Center

(The camera is positioned on a tripod on top of an exercise ball against a wall to face a row of treadmills. Michael squats in front of the camera with the GoPro head strap on. Behind him, Kelsey walks on a treadmill and Ceri uses an elliptical.)

Michael: Okay. Hello. As you can tell from my very professional appearance, I am... an expert and should be trusted with all things. Today I am going to test out something that I’ve wanted to do since the Switch was announced, and that is: see how realistic it is to jog while playing the Switch.

(The camera switches to the GoPro. Michael steps onto the treadmill to the right of Kelsey while holding his Nintendo Switch.)

Okay. So I’m placing the Switch on the treadmill and detaching the, uh... the Joy-Cons.

(Michael places the Joy-Cons in the two cup holders on either side of the treadmill console. The camera switches between the tripod perspective and the GoPro throughout the scene.)

I’m going to put them in here for now, so that I don’t lose them.

(The treadmill beeps as Michael starts it and changes the speed.)

I’m gonna to start. I'm gonna bring it up to six miles per hour.

(Michael places the Switch in the center of the treadmill console, picks up the Joy-Cons and begins to run. The GoPro footage becomes very shaky. The GoPro shows the Switch screen, but it's hard to make out what Michael's doing.)

Okay. Maybe it should be noted that the sensation of running with a GoPro on your head is... odd. Booting up Breath of the Wild. Here we go! Moving around seems not too difficult so far. Where’s my horse? It’s alright. It’s alright. This game makes a lot of use of using the Joy-Con’s motion sensors to aim, like if you pull out your bow you have to aim with this thing. So I need to go try to shoot something. This would be easier if I had a large screen to display this on. Because the screen is so small, with my head moving around like this, seeing what’s on the screen is probably the most difficult part of this. I pushed a button I didn’t mean to push. Okay. I’ve gotta go find somethin’ to kill. I guess I could teleport there. Let’s go... out here. Alright. I’m gonna find me some baddies! Why am I finding it so difficult to locate anybody to kill? Maybe I should hang out until night-time. Oh! There’s an enemy! Okay. Yeah, tryin’ to aim is pretty ridiculous. So anything that requires motion control is probably... not... what we want. And now I’m trying to take a picture. Got him! It’s not too bad, look! I’ve already run three quarters of a mile and I’ve been distracted by video games the whole time. This is awesome.

("Outro" plays over the end screen.)
