Google Wi-Fi: It claims to “replace your router and work with your modem and ISP… for an experience that's reliable, flexible and handles your.. online activities effortlessly.”

The routers come individually or in sets of 3. They have a sleek, minimal design, and each access point has dual 2 gigabit ethernet ports. The ports can act as either local or wide area network connections depending on whether the point is acting as an extender or the primary router.

A lot of houses require Wi-Fi extenders to prevent dead zones, and Google’s idea is to use identical routers to create a mesh network that can be managed simply and easily through the Google Wi-Fi app.

Each router has a QR code on the bottom which makes setup easy. All you have to do is hook the first router into your modem and then the app will guide you through the rest of the setup process.

We tested Google Wi-Fi in a 3 story house, and the 3 routers had no issues covering the entire space. There wasn’t a big difference in speeds compared to the high end router they were replacing, but when we tested it compared to a cheap wi-fi router from an internet service provider, the range and speed Google Wi-Fi provided was far superior.

Google has also built smart controls into the app for managing the devices connected to the modems. You can check to see how many devices are currently on the network and monitor the data they are using, as well as set temporary priority on certain devices if you are uploading or downloading large files.

There are also family features that allow you to set Wi-Fi schedules for certain devices or block websites.

Google Wi-Fi doesn’t offer groundbreaking features, but it is a well designed product that makes wi-fi more manageable. If you already have a mid to high end router, Google Wi-Fi will likely only offer minimal improvement and convenience, but if you are currently using the router from your internet service provider, Google Wi-Fi is a great option to give you more control over your devices while minimizing dead zones and spotty reception.
