The GoPro Hero 6 Black: it claims to be “the most powerful and convenient GoPro, yet,” and to set a “New bar for image quality, stabilization and simplicity.”

It can take 12MP still images and record video at 4K at up to 60fps and 1080p at 240fps. It starts at $400 for the camera, a micro SD card, and a mount.

The design of the Hero 5 and 6 took a step away from what had become the iconic GoPro look. Adapting some of the features from their short lived Session line, the outside is now made of a rubber material and is waterproof without the need for a case. Like every GoPro before it, there’s a small screen on the front for quick camera settings and recording information, but there is also a 2” LCD touchscreen on the back.

One of GoPro’s focuses has been to decrease the time it takes to start recording video or take a photo. When the GoPro is off, pressing the record button will take you straight into recording a video, and the camera also features voice commands so you can say “GoPro start recording” and it will start recording a video even if the camera wasn’t on.

The camera has 3 modes: Video, photo, and timelapse with each mode having options for special cases like lowlight pictures or looping video. Because of the touchscreen, navigating this GoPro is quicker and easier than when it forced you to either use the app or navigate using the hardware buttons.

Due to the wide angle of the lens, even with the addition of higher resolutions, unedited GoPro footage ends up looking distorted, so it can be hard to make it blend in alongside other camera footage.

The Hero 6 is small. It can fit in places a normal camera wouldn’t be able to, and GoPro has become the gold standard for action cameras, meaning it’s easy to find after market mounts and accessories. The Hero 6 uses the same mount as past GoPros, so it will work with any older mounting accessories you might have.

Unlike the Hero 4 and some of the earlier models, there isn’t a first party option for extending the Hero 6 battery life without losing the waterproof functionality. The only option for charging the GoPro is via the USB-C port, so while you can charge it with an external battery, if you need to record underwater or in the rain for an extended period of time, you’ll have to get a third party housing.

The GoPro Hero 6 Black, if anything, is refined. It takes the best of what GoPro offers and adds to that functionality with voice commands and higher resolutions at a higher framerate. If you’re looking for an action camera, the GoPro Hero 6 offers modern features while also keeping the experience simple and easy.
